For we dare not class ourselves or compare ourselves with those who commend themselves. But they…comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
I Corinthians 10:12
When we get to Heaven, God is not going to say, “Why weren’t you more like Moses or another one of the saints?” God is going to say,”Why weren’t you more like you?” God did not put us on earth to be someone else, but to be our own unique selves. I try not to spend my time comparing myself to others. Instead I strive to identify how I, in my own unique way, can serve God and live a growing and fulfilling life.
Jealousy is almost always caused by a “poor me” frame of mind. We feel threatened by how little we have and how much we perceive others to have. What we’re really saying when we express jealousy is that God made a mistake in how He made us or what he gave us. If only I had a little more , we seem to think, everything would be OK.
Jealousy prevents us from feeling happiness. We are so busy feeling sorry for ourselves because someone else got a promotion at work, a new car, a new dress, or a new baby that we can’t experience happiness at our friends’ successes. Even sadder, we can’t feel joy over the good things in our own lives.
Prayer: Lord, help me keep jealousy out of my life today so I can have room for loving and being loved.
